Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from Tiger Bill
I can’t believe it’s December already. Another year just about gone. Somebody needs to work on something to slow down TIME a bit. It’s going way too fast!

Before I get into the regular monthly updates, I’d like to ask for your help on behalf of a fellow drumhead. Rick Van Horn, the former editor of Modern Drummer Magazine, has dedicated three decades of his life to serving the drum community as a journalist, clinician, and instructor and he now needs our help. His wife of thirty-eight years, Crystal, has been diagnosed with leukemia. Many of you may know Crystal as the stage manager for eighteen Modern Drummer Festival Weekends. She has been Rick’s partner at many educational drumming events over the years including Cape Breton International Drum Festival, Drum Road Trip, and eight KoSA International Percussion Workshops. It was when I taught at KoSA Eleven that I had the chance to hang with and really get to know both Crystal and Rick. Now Crystal faces months of treatment and hospitalization that will leave behind huge medical bills, covered only partly by insurance. A fund has been established for donations from the drum community. Any amount will be greatly appreciated. Checks and international bank drafts may be made payable to the Crystal Van Horn Emergency Fund, and mailed to 218 Hamilton Avenue, Clifton, NJ 07011. Rick and Crystal Van Horn have touched the lives of many in the drum community over the years and this is your chance to return the favor. Please spread the word. Thank you!

Don’t know what to get for yourself or a drummer friend this year? Why not buy a ticket to DrumBeat Fest 2009? Because tickets are still selling, I’ve extended my Online DrumBeat Fest through the end of the year. So it’s not too late to treat yourself, or a drum friend, to a gift of a Ticket to DrumBeat Fest 2009. Tickets start at only $10.00 and your purchase goes to benefit the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research in memory of my dad. This year’s Fest features Zoro, Jason Bittner, and many other drumming greats featured in the newsletter that follows.

Speaking of Holiday gifts, I’ve also extended the Online DrumBeat Fest Auction so you won’t miss your chance at some once-in-a-lifetime deals on cool Drum DVDs, books, and other valuable drum gear. We’ve already sold lots of stuff last month but we will continue with the Online Auction until it’s all sold out. So Click Here to See What We’ve Got and to Place Your Bids Now. And a huge thank you goes to all the generous sponsors of DrumBeat Fest 2009: DRUM! Magazine, Alfred Publishing, Aquarian Drumheads, Audix Microphones, Axis Percussion, Beatnik Rhythmic Analyzers, Dream Cymbals, DrumFun, DW Drums, Evans Drumheads, Hudson Music, ProLogix Percussion, Pro-Mark Drumsticks, Sabian Cymbals, Sonor Drums, and Zildjian Cymbals.

The gigs I played at BB Kings in New York City last month were a real blast, as you’ll see if you check out the above video clip. Backstage I had the chance to hang with lots of talented musicians including Eddie Brigati, who was a member of the Young Rascals and Joey Dee and the Starliters – replacing his brother David Brigati who was also there. Two Jersey guys. Very cool. If you missed those gigs and you’re going to be anywhere in the vicinity of Butler, NJ on December 12th, you can catch me in Concert playing some cool Classic Rock with legendary lead guitarist of Vanilla Fudge Vince Martell at the Fusion Cafe. It’s in the Butler Church of the Nazarene 188 Kiel Avenue, Butler, NJ. The event is being hosted by longtime site member Chuck Corradino who, in addition to being a drumhead, is Pastor of the church. The doors open at 6:30 PM and showtime is 7:30 PM. Tickets are $10.00 at the door (No Advance Sales). If you do make it, be sure to stop by and say Hey and I’ll introduce you to Vinny and the rest of the band!

And don’t miss your chance to enter our two cool new contests this month with prizes courtesy of Alfred Publishing and Hudson Music. And while you’re at it, why not register and make some cash by becoming an affiliate of my online drum shop at DrummersWishList.com. It costs you nothing to join and you can earn up to 15% commission.

And for all those who have waited patiently… The second volume of my Tension Free Drumming: Hand Technique DVD and book will be available soon.

Until next time – Have fun, stay well, and stay loose!

What DrumHeads Are Saying…

-Email response received from DrumBeat Fest 2009 Ticket Purchaser-

Nice job on the drum fest. I liked the wide range and styles of the different artists. It gave the drum fest a wide range of technical exercises to solo information. What made it organic, down to earth and real was the fact that most of the artists were unknown to me. Other than you, Zoro and Jason B. I never heard of any of them. I got a late listen to the drum fest due to working out of town and not having internet access but it was well done and I will be looking forward to next year.
Have a great holiday season,

Russell Seufert
